On behalf of the United Nations in Sri Lanka, I extend heartfelt greetings to all those celebrating Vesak across the country and around the world.
Vesak is a sacred occasion that marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha.
It is a time for deep reflection on the values of compassion, peace, and wisdom—principles that resonate deeply with the ideals upheld by the United Nations.
It was Sri Lanka that led the call for Vesak to be recognized as an international observance by the United Nations, a recognition that honours the profound contribution of Buddhism, one of the world’s oldest spiritual traditions.
This milestone reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s enduring commitment to the Buddha’s teachings of tolerance, non-violence, and respect for the dignity of all.
In a world increasingly challenged by inequality, conflict, and climate instability, the timeless message of the Buddha carries profound relevance.
As the Secretary-General highlighted, it is these values that must guide our shared path forward.
The Buddha’s words remind us: “Hatred is not appeased by hatred, but only by loving-kindness".
This message urges us to uphold human dignity, protect and care for the vulnerable, and work collectively to bridge divides within and among communities.
As Sri Lankans come together to light lanterns and offer alms in the spirit of generosity, let us also recommit ourselves to building a future rooted in peace, justice, and inclusion.
The United Nations remains a steadfast partner to the people of Sri Lanka in this journey.
Wishing you all a peaceful and meaningful Vesak.
